I have been capturing clear, still images during exploratory night walks from 2009 to 2011. Free of daytime distractions such as traffic, people, and bright sunlight, these night walks make it possible to narrow your focus and really absorb your surroundings. At night we rely on lamps, streetlights, and illuminated signs to guide us. Our senses of place and direction will be better or worse depending on our inclination and adaptability to darkness.
The light in these photos is faint at first, but begins to glow more warmly and distinctly as the viewer pauses to take in the scene. Despite the absence of people in most of these shots, these city scenes are full of life; mysterious, reflective checkpoints on an ongoing nocturnal journey.
